From unpaved runway to international airport…
Like many other regional airport, Breda International Airport starts out as an unpaved runway for gliders. Airport “Seppe” makes name as a business airport when the runway is paved in 2002. Airport Seppe was opened as a glider airport in 1949. “Gliding was the only possible and affordable option back then”, Charles Jacobs, director of Breda International Airport, explains. “Older airplanes, used in the war, were used as towing planes. It was later, in 1961, that Seppe became an official aviation area. Then, motorized planes could land.”
Fast connections
Developments in aviation are moving along with economic developments. “In 1992, we had more flight movements than we have now. The world is changing continuously. We compete with other fast connections, like the TGV. But if you want to be in the southern part of France, a plane is the fastest option. This is also the case for places that are hard to reach, anywhere in Europe.” Important for airport Seppe was the pavement of the runway in 2002. This increased safety and independence of weather conditions. That last fact is very important, especially for business aviation.
Quality education
Apart from the continuous improvement of facilities, education of pilots is important. Jacobs himself started this in 1986, when opening up a pilot training school. Flight school Breda Aviation, currently owned by someone else, focusses on a professional and decent education of pilots. “We believe that is very important. Disciplined pilots are needed for aviation safety. Also for local residents, it is pleasant if all pilots fly well and in a safe way.”
Flying Museum Seppe
Last but not least, Jacobs points out to Flying Museum Seppe; an organization whose main purpose it is to exhibit historic aircrafts and to keep them flying in the air. Modern, motorized aviation is still young, but its’ history can be seen in the museum, from the very beginning up until now. The majority of the collection is airworthy and can be seen in the air on a regular basis.
